Situated on a large suburban property this substantial 11 metre salt water pool has been created in a formal design and in
harmony with the materials and form of the contemporary dwelling adjacent to it.
The pool is finished in a special gold and white pebble mix, with pale blue ceramic waterline tiles. The terracotta tiles that
form the pool coping also extend away from the pool to form an extensive entertaining area surrounding the pool and spa. The pool has been elevated above ground level and the use of a glass fence adjacent to the house means that there is an uninterrupted view of the pool from the house and from the paved forecourt, which leads to the terracotta steps up to the pool area.
The fundamental shape of the pool is rectangular, with both ends formed into opposing curved segments. The generous
entry steps are located in the shallow end of the pool and adjacent to the spa. There is one extended seat that has been formed in a rectangular cut-out opposite the spa and integrated into a feature wall about a metre and a half high. This wall
is finished in the same pale blue ceramic tiles as the waterline, but is surmounted by white tile in the same style. The
centre of the wall includes a ceramic tile inlay feature in a European flower motif. A sheer descent water feature falls smoothly out of the wall into the pool from a height of nearly a metre and a half.
On either side of the feature wall, a brick retaining wall has been constructed which runs the full length of the pool, extends
at right angles behind the shallow end of the pool and continues to form a retaining wall that runs behind the house. The brick used in this wall has been chosen to create a design that is in sympathy with the materials used in the exterior of the house. The capstone layer of bricks is the same charcoal colour as the roof tiles.
The pool, paved coping and retaining walls were poured as one integrated structure and is equipped with sand filtration and
solar heating in order to offer maximum use throughout the year.
The 3 metre by 1.8 metre spa is finished in exactly the same materials as the pool and is located at the same level. The
spa shape reflects the formal lines of the pool, combining the fundamental rectangle design with a curved wall. The spa is equipped with a 400 mega joule gas heater, air blower and 2 horsepower booster pump, driving 8 spa jets instead of the usual 4, providing a higher degree of comfort and an enhanced water massage effect. The spa jets are operated by a concealed fibre optic control system, leading to incredible reliability in operation.
There is an air of elegance about this pool. It is substantial in size and its formal lines and terracotta tiles speak of power
and privilege. It represents a lifestyle that many only aspire to; with Mediterranean influences blended with contemporary Australia. |
