A narrow site and poor access didn't hinder the successful construction of this rectangular-shaped, concrete-reinforced pool. The initial concept was the work of a landscape architect, then refined by the builder to ensure the pool functioned correctly and met the owners' expectations. Today the pool serves a dual purpose - as a plunge pool and a tranquil water feature, which is the highlight of the indoor/outdoor living area.
Located in the sun-bathed courtyard, the pool, which spans 5m x 2.7m, embodies simplicity and practicality. It has been created as a stunning focal point which can be viewed from three sides. A horizontal, sheer descent water feature set into the retaining wall / planter box cascades water into the pool, which then overflows down the stone steps, resembling a waterfall behind the glass fencing. The water flows into an underground balance tank, which then recirculates.
Fully tiled in crisp blue, the pool's interior ties in with a similarly-coloured feature wall and individual planter pots, contrasting beautifully with the light-coloured stone coping and courtyard paving. To enhance the ambience of the pool/water feature at night, Aquastar lighting was used, and gas heating ensures year-round swimming.
The home is flanked on either side by other houses, which meant that access to the courtyard was either over a 1m wall, down a skinny side pathway or (the preferred choice) through the garage and the home's living room.
