The pool coping is of terracotta tiles which match the exterior
of the house and which form the entertainment area and have been extended up to a patio around the house and to steps leading down to the water's edge. The pool interior has been finished with imported Italian blue glass mosaic tiles. The overflow wall into the balance tank has been finished in a dark green tile.
The entire concept is echoed in miniature in the shape,
design and finish of the spa, which has been placed between the pool and the house and elevated half a metre. The spa is consistent even to the inclusion of a large curved spillway which resembles the wet edge wall of the pool. |

This renovation project transformed a run down traditional
concrete pool into a modern sophisticated pool that is the showpiece of a sensational waterfront dwelling.
The original pool was of insufficient size for the owner's
requirements, lay at an angle to the dwelling and was cracked. It was decided to excavate part of the pool structure and then build the new pool inside the remaining section. The new pool was in part piered through holes drilled through the original pool floor and was designed so as to be parallel to the house. The pool forms part of a spacious entertainment area and is integral to a suspended concrete slab approximately 2.7 metres above ground level along one side. The space generated by this approach allows for a walk in equipment room under the slab. |
|
The renovated pool is a 10 by 4.5 metre salt water pool equipped with solar heating, sand filtration and automatic water
level adjustment. The new design retains the rectangular shape which has been altered by the addition of a curving wet edge along the side of the pool adjacent to the water views. The wet edge system allows completely unimpeded views of the waterway and yet affords complete privacy, because the overflow falls 2.4 metres into the 4,000 litre balance tank below, removing the need for pool fencing along this section. The remaining fencing consists of handrail with stainless steel wires for safety and maximum visibility. |
|
The renovation included the original orientation of deep and shallow ends, but enhanced the utilisation by adding a full length
underwater seat along the side of the pool adjacent to the house.
The new design is a pool that takes complete advantage of the privacy afforded by an elevated location, coupled with
stunning harbour views and a complete unity of the use of line and space between pool and the house. |
